The Slack desktop app is the best way to experience Slack on the Mac operating system (OS). To get started, take a look at the steps we've outlined below.

There are two ways to download Slack for Mac: from the App Store, or the Slack downloads page.

App Store

Download from Slack

1. Find Slack in the App Store.
2. Click Install.
3. To launch Slack, open a Finder window, select the Applications folder in the sidebar, then find and double-click the Slack icon.

4. Double click the Slack .dmg file. This will open a small window.

Slack keeps asking me to update

This can happen if you have more than one version of Slack installed on your computer. For example, a copy of Slack might exist in both the Applications and Downloads folders. Here's what you'll need to do to fix this issue:

1. Open Finder and search for Slack (make sure This Mac filter is selected).
2. Highlight all copies of Slack and delete them.
3. In your dock, right click on the Trash icon and select Empty Trash.
4. Get the latest version of Slack, and install it in the Applications folder.

This can happen if you're not an administrator and don't have write access to slack.app on your Mac machine. If the issue persists, an IT administrator can adjust the write permissions for Slack or change where Slack is installed on your computer.

This script will download a zip archive containing the latest version of the Slack app for OS X and install it by placing the app extracted from the downloaded archive in the /Applications directory.

How the script works:

1. Uses curl to download a zip archive containing the latest Slack app from OS X from the Slack website into the /tmp directory.

2. Extracts the zip contents in /tmp.

3. Checks whether Slack is running, removes existing Slack app, moves new Slack app from /tmp to /Applications and sets the owner to root:admin

4. Removes the Slack app zip from the /tmp Apple macbook sale for students.
